Prevent Cavities with Fluoride

Posted .

Your teeth are made up of mineral crystals that give your teeth the toughness they need to bite, chew and grind the foods you eat. Unfortunately, it is also possible for acidic foods and beverages as well as the pervasive bacteria in your mouth to erode the mineral structures of your teeth.

This process, which is known as demineralization, can weaken your tooth enamel if it is not counteracted. In time, it can create microscopic channels in your tooth enamel, leading to tooth sensitivity when you consume hot, cold, sweet or acidic products.

Exposing your teeth to fluoride restores the density of these microscopic minerals. If your teeth suffer from significant demineralization, your Designing Smiles PSC dentist, Dr. Dennis Jenkins, might recommend getting a fluoride treatment after your regular dental checkup.

This can be done immediately following your regular dental checkup and cleaning. During the treatment, concentrated fluoride will be poured into special trays that are inserted into your mouth and held there for a few minutes. You will need to avoid eating and drinking for up to an hour to maximize the fluoride saturation in your tooth enamel.

If you’re concerned about the strength of your tooth enamel, you should call Designing Smiles PSC at 812-246-3386 to ask about getting a fluoride treatment in Sellersburg, Indiana.
